Liberty Group Programme - What To Expect On Fridays.

Updated: Jan 11

Liberty - Managing Addiction with Help from Others and experts.

If you’re thinking about coming to Liberty, you might be wondering what actually happens on a Friday night — and whether you’ll have to speak, explain yourself, or “have it all together.”

Liberty is a calm, therapist-led group for people affected by someone else’s addiction. Many people arrive feeling nervous, tired, or on edge. Some are carrying years of secrecy, crisis, and stress. The point of the group is simple: you’re not alone here, and you’re not expected to fix anyone. You’re here to get support, learn what helps, and start rebuilding your own steadiness and confidence. And you don’t even have to come alone — you can bring a trusted friend or family member for your first three sessions at no extra cost.

Liberty runs every Friday at 8pm in Pery Square, Limerick, and lasts two hours. People join for 12 sessions. Just turn up and begin on whichever Friday suits.

Liberty - Who is it For?

The group is for partners, parents, and friends impacted by addiction, including alcohol, drugs, gambling, and internet use. There’s a mix of people: some have a loved one still in active addiction, some have a loved one in a programme, and others are dealing with the confusion of early recovery. The common thread is the same: addiction has been shaping your life, and you need a place where you can speak honestly or simply listen without judgement.

Liberty Group Meet - What happens?

Each Friday has a clear structure. The first part is a short, practical talk led by the therapist. This isn’t a lecture and it isn’t “therapy talk.” It’s plain English guidance on one topic that matters to families — the kind of topic that makes everyday life harder when addiction is in the home. For example: guilt and self-blame, anxiety and overthinking, communication and trust, how addiction affects family roles, or how to set boundaries you can actually keep. These topics come from four years of experience running the Gate Recovery Addiction Programme, and the team has shaped Liberty around 18 themes that repeatedly show up in families living with addiction.

After the talk, the group opens into a compassionate discussion on that same topic. This is the part people often find surprisingly powerful. You can share, ask questions, or simply listen. You’re not put on the spot. You’re not forced to speak. Many people start by listening for a few weeks, and that’s perfectly fine. The value is that you’re with others who get it — people who understand the patterns: the rescuing, the appeasing, the walking on eggshells, the arguments, the fear, the exhaustion, and the feeling that you’re losing your relationship to a “third person” (the addiction). In this confidential space, you don’t have to pretend everything is normal.

Liberty Group Meet - What Do I Gain?

You’ll leave each session with something practical: a clearer way to respond, a boundary to try, a sentence you can use, or a simple plan for the week ahead. Liberty isn’t about fixing someone else’s addiction — past or present. It’s about creating a new pattern with the same person: less reacting, less rescuing, more calm, more clarity, and boundaries you keep. If it helps, you can bring a trusted friend or family member for your first three sessions for extra support, at no extra cost. And if you need one-to-one counselling alongside the group, that option is available too. The next step is simple: just turn up on Friday at 8pm.
