Understanding Pornography Addiction

Pornography addiction can develop gradually, often beginning as a coping mechanism for stress, boredom, or loneliness. Over time, use can become compulsive—hard to control even when it causes distress, secrecy, or relationship strain.

At MyMove Together, we provide confidential counselling for individuals who feel trapped in a cycle of pornography use. The goal is not shame or judgment, but understanding what drives the behaviour and learning tools to regain control.

Common Signs of Pornography Addiction

Sex addiction is a behavioural addiction that was proposed into DSM-V .

While experiences vary, many people notice:

  • Repeated failed attempts to cut down or stop.

  • Spending increasing amounts of time viewing pornography.

  • Using porn to escape stress, anxiety, or negative emotions.

  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or secrecy around usage.

  • Impact on sexual intimacy or trust in relationships.

Recognising these signs is the first step toward recovery.

Our Approach to Counselling

Pornography addiction is best understood as a form of compulsive sexual behaviour—a behavioural addiction involving the brain’s reward system.
Our approach combines:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and triggers.

  • Mindfulness techniques: to reduce impulsive urges and re-engage self-control.

  • Emotional regulation and stress management: to replace the role pornography has taken in daily life.

  • Relationship and trust work: where relevant, to repair communication and rebuild closeness.

Therapy is led by a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist holding a Diploma in Sex Addiction Counselling (ISAT, UK), accredited with CPCAB, COSRT, and ATSAC.
